Free fraction calculator. Perform arithmetic operations on fractions with step-by-step results. Simplify fractions, find common denominators, and convert to decimals.
Working with fractions doesn't have to be frustrating. Enter two fractions and choose an operation (add, subtract, multiply, or divide). The calculator shows the result as a simplified fraction and as a decimal. It also shows the steps: finding a common denominator for addition/subtraction, multiplying numerators and denominators for multiplication, and flipping the second fraction for division. Great for students, cooks scaling recipes, and woodworkers measuring materials.
The common denominator is the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. For example, to add 1/3 and 1/4: the LCM of 3 and 4 is 12, so convert to 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.
A simplified fraction has the smallest possible whole numbers for the numerator and denominator. For example, 4/8 simplifies to 1/2. The calculator does this automatically by dividing both numbers by their greatest common factor (GCF).
